Discover Architecture is a two-week program offered by the Illinois School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign which provides high school students and beginning college students the opportunity to be introduced to architectural graphics, design, and modeling. Discover Architecture students learn about the roles and responsibilities of architects in relation to design, the profession, and the environment. Discover Architecture exposes students to an university atmosphere, complete with dorm living, faculty lectures, and architectural studio.

Discover Architecture is a rigorous and involved program, and it requires students to engage in a mature and informed way. Instruction, lectures, films, and a Chicago field trip led by faculty are scheduled during the day. The evenings offer opportunities to explore the campus and recreation facilities with fellow students. Throughout the two-week session, students engage in a series of exercises including drafting, modeling, composition, design, and presentation, which lead to a comprehensive architectural design project. Students work with faculty, teaching assistants, and each other in one-on-one and group critiques to discuss and improve upon their individual designs. The final product is displayed in a gallery at the end of the session for students, parents, and faculty.

The design process in studio is the primary emphasis of the program. The design studio environment is a major factor in facilitating comprehensive design and interaction amongst the students and faculty. Each student receives his or her own desk, which is open to the rest of the studio. A sense of inclusion between the students is important in easing conversations about design. Afternoons are spent in studio where students apply information from the morning lecture session into their design solutions. Throughout the two weeks, students work on a series of short design exercises related to a single, comprehensive, architectural design project.
CHICAGO FIELD TRIP:
Outside of studio, students get to experience Chicago’s historic architecture on a daylong field trip. The trip consists of walking and boat tours of the city and concludes with a presentation and tour of a firm. This trip allows students to look at architecture critically and to experience what architectural opportunities are available in the work force.
SEMINARS AND FIRMS:
Each day the Illinois School of Architecture faculty and visiting professionals demonstrate and discuss architecture and the design process. These lectures introduce new topics that broaden students' understanding of architecture. An entire lecture on architecture as a career path, the processes involved with licensure, architectural education, and the application process enables students to understand the different outlets available to pursue architecture as a career.
During the evening, students view films and slides introducing architects, ideas, and architectural projects to further explore the field.

Monday: lecture and project overview, drawing and drawing transformations, video
Tuesday: lecture, drawing in studio, video
Wednesday: lecture, begin to work at scale of site, guest lecture, video
Thursday: trip to Chicago, IL (city tour, lunch, boat tour, sketching, firm tour, dinner)
Friday: lecture, continuation of drawing exploration
Saturday: begin mock models, and night out at the Union
Sunday: morning free, continue with study models, computer lab, movie
Monday: lecture, critiques of study models, guest lecture, begin drawings
Tuesday: lecture, final production of drawings/model, guest lecture
Wednesday: complete final drawings (plan, section, and elevation)
Thursday: guest lecture, final model + drawing completion
Friday: final presentation wrap-up, gallery set-up, pizza dinner, movie
Saturday: final gallery presentation, certificate ceremony, slideshow, check-out/departure

We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Discover Architecture High School Competition. This is an exciting competition where high school students put their drawing skills to the test. All high school students in both public and private schools in grades 9-11 are encouraged to participate. The focus this year is on architectural drawing. Students are encouraged to draw from life; however, creative liberty is encouraged as well.
This competition is an excellent vehicle for students to explore an interest in architecture and design, as well as compete for an opportunity to attend Discover Architecture, the Illinois School of Architecture’s residential two-week summer program.

1. The content of the drawing must be architectural - a space, building, an urban formation and/or a landscape or garden.
2. Entries can be elevations, sections, or perspectives, and can be conceptual or final renderings. Exploration and innovation in unique techniques are encouraged.
3. Submittals are strongly encouraged to have been drawn in situ – at the location.
4. Either a single image or a page combining different views, diagrams, and conventions is acceptable.
5. All pieces must be drawn by hand. No computer generated images will be accepted.
