The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), passed in 1990, had sweeping consequences for all persons with disabilities as well as all those in the building and construction industries, especially architects. In 2015, its 25th anniversary was commemorated with special events in cities and states across the USA.

5x5 Participatory Provocations opened on January 14, 2017 at Omi International Arts Center in Ghent, NY and will be on view until March 12. Co-curated by Associate Professor Kevin Erickson, The exhibition features models by 25 young American architects and was previously on view at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, IL, the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative in Cleveland, OH, and the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI.
Assistant Professor Yun Kyu Yi of the Illinois School of Architecture, along with several colleagues, were chosen to have their article titled “Programmable Kiri-Kirigami Metamaterials” published on Advanced Science News’ website.
Professor Joy Monice Malnar, AIA, retired from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on January 15, 2017, after nearly two decades on the faculty of the School of Architecture. Upon retirement, she was awarded emeritus status by the university’s Board of Trustees. Malnar’s career exemplifies the value of situating an architecture school within an arts college at a research university.
The Illinois School of Architecture’s chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architecture Students (NOMAS) will hold its 2017 Symposium on Friday and Saturday, February 3-4, in Temple Buell Hall. The symposium’s theme is Design + Public Impact.

The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) has just launched The Journal of Technology | Architecture + Design (TAD), the first new journal published by the association in over 70 years. Assistant Professor Marci Smith Uihlein was instrumental in the journal’s founding, and now serves on its inaugural editorial board.
